LIVE PERFORMANCE 07/11/25
EVAN PARKER / MATT WRIGHT / FILIPE GOMES return with TRANCEMAP+ in Bristol
“We haven’t even really talked about what we’ll do. But maybe that’s the point”
A while ago, Evan Parker asked me to perform with him and Matt Wright at Free Range in Canterbury. After so many years working with Evan in a recording capacity, the invitation caught me by surprise. I’ve always seen myself more as a listener of Evan’s work — and more specifically, a documenter of it. Capturing his sonic world has been a quiet privilege over many sessions and evenings together, where we’ve experimented with microphone techniques and explored the nuances of his playing. But sharing a stage with him? That had never crossed my mind.
So when he asked, I felt honoured. Genuinely blessed. It was a moment that marked a shift — not just in our collaboration, but in the way I understood our connection.
The months that followed were a process of discovery. None of us really knew what the performance would be. There was no fixed outcome in mind — just a shared curiosity and a willingness to see what emerged. Evan, with his decades of experience, knew better than to try and force it. He trusted in the process, in the act of navigating something new together.
And we found something. When we finally performed at Free Range, we did it without rehearsal and without much discussion beforehand. We simply walked on stage and began. That in itself was remarkable. Somehow, it worked. It wasn’t just the performance that was powerful — it was the fact that it was our first time performing together, and yet it felt deeply connected.
Now, it looks like that won’t be a one-off. We’re set to perform again — this time at the Arnolfini in Bristol 7th November 2025. I feel the same sense of honour and excitement as I did the first time, though perhaps this time with a little more wonder at what might unfold. We haven’t planned anything. We haven’t even really talked about what we’ll do. But maybe that’s the point.
Maybe the trust, the openness, and the not-knowing — that’s the real performance.
